Congratulations on your engagement. We welcome you to the Catholic Community of Saint Charles Borromeo. We encourage couples to marry within their own parish or dioceses; however we understand St. Charles is a desirable location for a Catholic wedding in the Livermore wine region.

Couples wishing to be married at St. Charles may choose between our chapel and our church. The chapel can seat twenty-five guests, while our church can accommodate four hundred and thirty-five guests.

Marriage is a sacred sacrament of the Catholic Church. The couple should contact St. Charles to schedule a meeting with the priest or deacon at least six (6) months prior to their planned wedding date. The church has established expectations the couple will have to meet before the sacrament may be celebrated. The couple will have several subsequent meetings with the priest as they prepare for their wedding.

  • The bride or groom must be a practicing Catholic. Their Baptismal certificate will need to be provided.
  • Complete Marriage Preparation classes. The purpose of the marriage preparation is to help the couple grow in love, and be open to God’s grace, to support a happy and fulfilling sacramental marriage.
  • Obtain a Civil Marriage License
  • Complete an Affidavit of Freedom to Marry (the priest will provide the form).
  • Non-parishioners will need to provide a letter of permission as well as the preparatory paper work from their home parish.

Wedding Date Scheduling

The wedding date may be scheduled, with the approval of the priest, following the initial meeting with the couple.

Weddings may be scheduled on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays as the church calendar permits. Weddings may not be scheduled on the first Saturday of the month. Weddings may be scheduled to begin at 6:00pm Friday evenings, Saturdays any time between 10:00am and 2:00pm, and Sundays any time between 1:00pm and 2:00pm.

Ceremony Fees

The ceremony fees are due within 10 days of setting the date. Make check payable to St. Charles Borromeo. If the ceremony fee is not received within this timeframe, the date and time will be released from the church calendar.

The fee covers all the sacrament paperwork, use of the church for one (1) hour rehearsal and use of the church for three (3) hours the day of the wedding. The three hours includes pre-ceremony preparation, the ceremony, and post-ceremony photographs.

Promptness is necessary to ensure adequate time after the ceremony for photographs. Please note that other events may be scheduled in the church on the day of the wedding.

Changing rooms are not available; however there is a waiting room for the bride in the church.

Visiting Priest/Deacon

St. Charles welcomes visiting priests/deacons on a per-case basis. A statement from their diocese verifying their credentials (Celebret) must be sent to St. Charles before the priest/deacon will be approved to preside at your wedding.

Non-Catholic Clergy

St. Charles is a Catholic church; therefore, only Catholic ceremonies may be performed. A Catholic priest must preside at a wedding mass. A Catholic priest or a deacon can preside at a vow ceremony.

Non-Catholic clergy may participate in the wedding ceremony upon approval of the presider.

Wedding Coordinator

The Wedding Coordinator is the couple’s liaison with St. Charles . The couple should contact the coordinator soon after the wedding is scheduled. She will assist the couple with the logistics of the wedding. Any questions should be directed to her.

Music

Music is a big part of the wedding ceremony. All music should be appropriate sacred music.

The couple should contact the parish music director soon after the wedding is scheduled. The music director will assist the couple in choosing music suitable to a Catholic wedding ceremony.

Outside musicians may be used, subject to the approval of the music director. The musician(s) must be familiar with Catholic liturgy. A consultation fee, payable to the music director, is charged for approval and meeting with the outside musician(s). Fees paid to outside musician(s) are the responsibility of the couple.

Photographing/Videotaping

Great care should be taken to respect the sacramental nature of a wedding in the Catholic Church.

The professional photographer is permitted to rove about during the procession and recession of the ceremony. Once the mass begins, the photographer must remain is an approved fixed position. Videographers must remain in an approved fixed position for the entire ceremony. Flash or lighting is not permitted during the ceremony.

Guests are not permitted to photograph or move about during the ceremony. The couple is responsible for informing the guests and the professional photographer/videographer of the guidelines. Anyone failing to follow the guidelines will be escorted out of the church.

Forty-five minute is allotted for staged photographs following the ceremony.

Environment and Flowers

The wedding coordinator will assist the couple in planning flowers, candles, and other decorations that enhance the worship environment. Existing decorations for the church environment, which will vary with the liturgical season, may not be moved nor removed. Decorations during the seasons of Lent and Advent need to be minimal to reflect those liturgical seasons. The seating in the church may not be changed. Diocesan policy and safety concerns do not allow the scattering of anything on the floor (flower petals, birdseed, rice, etc.). The use of bubbles is not permitted in the church.

Programs

Couples are encouraged to create a program (worship aid) to hand to their guests. The wedding coordinator can share examples of programs to show typical content. It is the couple’s responsibility to create and duplicate the worship aid.

Additionally, the music director can help to create a separate, reproducible music song sheet as a secondary worship aid which will meet copyright and licensing laws for printed music. Please note that the fee for this is above and beyond the musician fee, as indicated below. The reproduction of a music worship aid may be done in two ways: 1) the music director will make copies on standard, pastel/neutral colored copy paper. This is included in the copyright and licensing fee; or 2) the couple may take the master copy to a print shop and make copies on their own choice of paper at the their own cost. The fee for copyright and licensing printed music still apply.

Conduct and Respect

The priest and personnel have scheduled their time to participate in celebrating your wedding. It is the expectation of St. Charles Borromeo that the wedding begin at the scheduled time.

All of the wedding party and guests should conduct themselves in a respectful and reverent manner while in the church.

Refreshments may not be served on the church grounds. No food or drink is allowed inside the church.
